Back then, the OWLE (Optical Widgets

for Life Enhancement) was in a concept stage, but the OWLE Bubo is ready for pre-order.
The Bubo has a hotshoe mount with LED lights, with four tripod mounts. It has a standard 37mm lens that is threaded so you can put other lenses on it, besides the one that the Bubo already comes with. I believe that it also comes with a front-facing microphone.

So what are we looking at, some new way that video bloggers can gain better video footage? I certainly hope so.

By the way, I think I know why they call it the Bubo. Anyone remember the 1981 Ray Harryhausen Greek myth film Clash of the Titans? Yes, Bubo was the name of the mechanical owl that Athena gave to Perseus to aid him on his quest. I guess someone wanted an R2D2 character in their classical Greek movie adaptation.

Anyway, this OWLE has been on quite a quest since its first concept drawing, and the designers won some award for iFund’s “Most Promising Startup”. The Bubo will be available for pre-order tomorrow for $99.95.
Source

USB Massage Scarf

There is nothing quite like having a nice neck massage after a long, hard day at work. First I’d make sure that they aren’t anti-pink though. This keyboard not only has a very feminine look through the bubblegum pink color and the the pretty lettering, but it also is a Juicy Couture product. Giving them a chance to flaunt their female side and show off their love of brand name products.

Normally I’m really not all that fond of pink electronics or wearing anything Juicy Couture, but for some unknown reason I find this keyboard charming and even fun. The flexible rubber USB keyboard is built for easy transport. Just roll it up and pack it away, you won’t have to worry about this breaking. The only two things I really wish I could change is that it’d be nice to have the option to choose a different color and, of course, the price. No, $45 isn’t too bad, but it would be nice if it was just a little cheaper.

LG enV Touch VX11000

Just after introducing the Voyager in 2007, the manufacturers have come up with LG enV Touch VX11000 – a non-smartphone incorporating a full touch-sensitive display, along with internal QWERTY keyboard. The proposed name “Voyager 2” was retired, as this new model has notable improvements such as – two large 3” WVGA displays; improved user interface; quality of calls; and 3 megapixels autofocus camera.

At the very first look of it, you can easily identify that this new handset is an upgrade from the Voyager, though both have many similar characteristics in design – clamshell form-factor with 2-stop hinges. Unlike the Voyager, the display takes more space in the front; pewter chrome accents surrounding and not shiny and reflective as the mirror chrome. The soft-touch coating remains still in the backside. The size of the handset is - 4.52 x 2.16 x 0.66 inches (115 x 55 x 17 mm).

The external 3 inches resistive touchscreen display is quite impressive, which has WVGA 800 x 480 pixel resolution, supporting 1.6 million colors. Excepting that it is not touch-sensitive, the internal display is of same size and specifications. Its outer shell is a mix of black and silver plastic with a shiny, fingerprint-attracting, finish. The silver extends to a band around the edges of the device and the frame of the navigation button beneath the screen.

Acer's X960 is a well-specified Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone with a 2.8in. VGA-resolution screen. It costs £339.25 (inc. VAT; £295 ex. VAT) SIM-free from Clove Technology.

The remaining front buttons — Call and End, Home and a button bearing a satellite logo denoting GPS functionality — are all large and easy to access.

The X960 is a slightly squat device. Its side edges are tapered inwards, making it seem slightly thinner than it actually is, but the measured dimensions reveal it to be 106.4mm tall, 59mm wide and 13.7mm thick. It weighs a relatively hefty 132g.

The screen measures 2.8in. across diagonal and has a native resolution of 640 by 480 pixels (VGA). The edges carry a range of connectors and ports, all embedded in that band of silver. On the bottom is the mini-USB connector that caters for power, PC connectivity and the supplied stereo headset.

The left edge has a volume rocker and a button that activates the built-in voice recorder. On the right edge is a camera button, the main on/off switch, and a microSD card slot. This slot is protected by a hinged cover that we found rather awkward to lift. You definitely need fingernails, and may have to resort to removing the backplate for easier access.

The Acer X960 ships with an AC adapter, a USB PC cable, a screen protector, a stereo headset (with USB connector), a printed short manual and two CDs containing documentation and PC connectivity software.

Features
The Acer X960 runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. It has 256MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM. If, like us, you choose to install the four applications that are offered at startup, you'll be left with just 80MB of free storage memory — in which case you'll probably need to add extra storage via a microSD card. The processor, a 533MHz Samsung SC3 6400, is the same as in Acer's DX900.

The four applications on offer are: a backup utility, a replacement for Windows Mobile's on-screen QWERTY keyboard that's slightly larger and therefore easier to use; a streaming media player; and a USB management utility.

Acer has packed plenty of features into the DX960. It's a quad-band GSM phone with HSDPA, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), Bluetooth (2.0) and GPS (SiRFstar III) and it has a front-facing camera for two-way video calling. The main camera at the back is a 3.2 megapixel unit with a small LED flash and self-portrait mirror. Cameras on Windows Mobile devices tend to be somewhat lacklustre, and this one is no exception. However, it's fine for the odd snap unless you're in low light or want high-quality output.

Where this smartphone stands out from the crowd is with its user interface. Windows Mobile devices often have an overlay onto Windows Mobile itself, to help them be more finger-friendly and appeal to a wider audience. The X960 comes with such an overlay, and it's significantly different to anything we've seen before.

The main screen is actually three screens wide: you move left to right by dragging with your finger. It offers three groups of shortcut icons to applications, arranged to look like items sitting on an office desk. The first screen offers email, messaging, calls (all three with a status indicator of missed calls or incoming messages), diary and weather information (which is updated over the air). Flip to the next screen and you have contacts, music and photos, all of which appear in carousels that you can finger-scroll through, avoiding the Windows Mobile user interface itself.

Acer's three-screen interface shell is designed to resemble an office desk.

The third screen offers web access, settings and a link to QuickMenu, which is a grid of user-configurable application icons. There are 12 icons on-screen at any one time, but you can finger-scroll to get to more.

The QuickMenu screen is accessible from any of the 'desk' screens, offering a 4-by-3 grid of pre-configured application icons.

Finally, from any of those 'desk' menu screens, a vertical finger-scroll will bring up a pre-configured menu of application icons. The Windows Mobile Start button is accessible at all times, allowing you to bail out to the standard Windows Mobile UI if necessary.

Google Maps is built in, and there are some other extras, including Memory Optimiser. This allows you to automatically end tasks that have been idle for a set period of time, automatically restart the device at a specified time and set a restart when memory gets below a certain level — an indication that Windows Mobile's memory management is not what it could be.

Performance & battery life
The X960's 533MHz processor is up to the task of driving this well-featured handheld. Call quality was fine, while battery life was reasonable for a Windows Mobile 6.1 device. To test the latter, we set the X960 to play music non-stop from a full battery, which it did for 7 hours 53 minutes. This beats the Acer DX900 (5 hours 38 minutes) by some margin.

Of course, if you use HSDPA, Wi-Fi or GPS for extended periods, then battery life will be considerably less than this headline figure.

Sony Ericsson T707

The full specs of Sony Ericsson T707 include:

* 2.2 inch TFT internal display with 240 x 320 pixels and 262K colors
* Quad band GSM connectivity
* UMTS/HSDPA 2100 connectivity (T707)
* UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900/2100 connectivity (T707a – North America will probably get this)
* Google Maps
* NetFront HTML browser
* Email, Exchange ActiveSync
* Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
* YouTube access
* Media Player
* FM radio with RDS
* 3.2 MP camera with video recording and geotagging
* 100MB of internal memory
* Memory Stick Micro card support, up to 16GB
* 93 x 50 x 14.1 mm (3.7 x 2.0 x 0.6 inches)
* 95 grams (3.4 ounces)

se-t707-maria-sharapova

se-t707-maria-sharapova-2

Sony Ericsson T707 will hit the market in the second quarter of 2009, in three color versions: Mysterious Black, Lucid Blue and Spring Rose. Well, they haven’t done it this time either,

though they substitute it for a bolder adjective, ‘rugged’. The Nokia 3720 Classic is out

to dare all the other phones in the circuit including the Land Rover phone that we saw

sometime back. The phone is said to be ‘leak proof’ with the cover of the battery

chamber actually screwed to the body of the phone. I’m really apprehensive to get the

first glimpse and review of this phone, and some added strain test results. The other

features of the phone include a 1 GB microSD card, 2.2 inch display screen (no news on

the toughness of this), LED flashlight and the usual goodies that come with such phones.

I hope that there’s a camera that they forgot to mention.

Nokia's Surge Official On AT&T, Shiped July 19

We've known about Nokia's so-called Surge for months now, but at long last, AT&T has done its duty by making things official and giving us a price and release date to consider. For just $79.99 after rebate, you'll also get a 2 megapixel camera, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Video Share and the pleasure of handing over at least $30 per month for a required data plan (if you want the $50 rebate, anyway). Look no further than T-Mobile UK for the GT500 from LG where the well-equipped HSDPA full touch handset that we've been tracking for a while now is apparently now shipping. Headlining features include a 5 megapixel cam with image stabilization, AGPS, tethering capability, 130MB of onboard storage, and microSD expansion (though really, what phone in 2009 doesn't have a microSD slot besides the Pre, the iPhone, and a weird Pantech here and there?). Rumors persist that this might eventually show up on Rogers, so one way or another, you're probably going to have to end up in a Commonwealth nation if you want this thing badly enough.

Glancing at its spec-sheet, Toshiba's Portégé A600-14C reads like any mobile business user's dream: a 12.1in laptop with integrated 3G/HSDPA that weighs less than a kilo and a half, all without breaking the bank. We're still rather impressed following Toshiba's awesome NB200-10Z netbook, so let's see if the A600-14C can uphold the imposing pedigree.

One thing you might notice about the A600-14C is that, despite its light weight, at 29.9mm it is rather thick - especially when compared to the svelte Toshiba Portégé R600. It's still a fairly nice-looking machine for its sector, but if you want a stylish 12.1in business laptop you're better off with the (admittedly more expensive) Dell Latitude E4200.

When closed, the A600 shows off the chromed and indented Toshiba logo on its lid, which complements the machine's overall semi-matte silver finish rather well. Thanks to its LED-backlit screen, the lid is very thin at less than half a centimetre. It is also slightly smaller than the laptop's base so that the backlit icons in the palm-rest are visible on the protruding base with the laptop closed.

Opening the lid, most will be pleased to hear the screen is surrounded by a matte black bezel, though there's a small glossy section for the webcam. Aside from a couple of chromed touches for the power button and around the touchpad , though, the A600 is substance over style, so you needn't worry about tiresome fingerprints or scratch-prone glossy plastics.

Dell Inspiron 13 Gets a New Look

Dell
have introduced an update for their Inspiron 13 laptop. sharing to unprecedented heights, as these devices are able to deliver real-time information through its partnership with FrameChannel. Among such real-time information available at the user’s fingertips include personalized weather, traffic and sports scores alongside the capability of accessing both music and video to any room within the connected home. This trend-setting product category makes the standard digital photo frame all the more interactive, since you can now share priceless memories with friends and family regardless of where they are automatically courtesy of FrameChannel. It can link favorite content from other social sites including Flickr, Photobucket and Facebook.

You will be able to access the feature-packed channels via Toshiba’s FrameChannel partnership, customizing the categories according to information that only you want. There are more than 1,000 free channels available at this moment, spread across 19 categories with selections like People.com, Men’s Tennis, 3-Day Forecast, Stock Quotes and Facebook, among others. Users who decide to subscribe to their favorite channels will see the Toshiba Digital Media Frame automatically update with real-time information, keeping you in the loop at all times without making you feel left out whenever your mates start discussing last night’s game scores at the water cooler.

Toshiba makes sure their Digital Media Frames won’t disappoint in terms of design, coming in a high gloss exterior (ala fingerprint magnet) alongside a high resolution display, a tilt sensor that adjusts the image automatically in its respective formats, easy navigation, touch sensitive controls that light up whenever pressed and a fully customizable interface to suit your personality. You will be able to choose from 8″ models that will come in in black (DMF82XKU) or white (DMF82XWU) with an acrylic front finish and eye-catching reflective trim, while the black 10″ model (DMF102XKU) comes with a striking faceplate design and a slim profile. That means no price, no
model name, no date of availability. And without seeing, in person,
whether this LGS backlighting provides a comparable image to a regular
CCFL backlight, it difficult to guess if we'll even see any of the new
technology in production sets. But that's fine—for now, we gawk

LG Display Co Ltd has developed what it claims are the world's thinnest
42- and 47-inch LCD TV panels. Employing the company's edge-lit LED
(light emitting diode) backlight system, these LCD TV panels realize a
panel thickness of 5.9mm.

The company's proprietary LGS (light guide sheet) technology enabled
the company to reduce the thickness of the light guide plate (LGP) by
more than half. LGP changes the direction of light beams. In addition,
the 42- and 47-inch LCD TV panels weigh in at a mere 6.1kg and 7.3kg
each, about 50% lighter than the same size of conventional CCFL-backlit
product.

The displays can reproduce a rich range of natural-looking colors with
color saturation level of 80% (NTSC). The panels feature the company's
120Hz technology with a motion picture response time (MPRT) of 8ms,
eliminating motion blur and boasting full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution.

Philips Cinema 21:9 LCD TVs

When you made the switch from a 4:3 regular TV to a widescreen at
16:9 you were probably disappointed to still see big black borders on
the top and bottom of your films that were still there… of course they
weren’t quite as bad… but you probably hoped that all of the screen
would have been used now that it’s widescreen… For this reason Philips
have launched the Cinema 21:9 cinema proportioned LCD TV that according
to Philips is a world first.

Having an aspect ration of 21:9 it matches the cinema so that any
films displayed do not have borders on the top and bottom. The TV
measures 56 inch diagonal and should be available Spring 2009.

We don’t just watch films at the cinema we experience
them. The 21:9 aspect ratio of a cinema screen was developed to mimic
our own peripheral vision, providing a totally immersive viewing
experience.

This immersion is what makes 21:9 cinematic viewing such an
all-encompassing experience and why until now it has continued to
provide the optimum medium in which to fully enjoy films. Such is its
power that we routinely undergo an intensely personal, emotional
journey when watching a film in a cinema. It is the experience of
‘losing ourselves’ in a film.

This Cinematic Viewing Experience is extremely difficult to
replicate at home. Even the largest conventional TV screen cannot
provide the total immersion that we enjoy at a cinema because when it
comes to watching a film, the viewing experience isn’t determined by
screen size.

Films fill a cinema screen.The images reach right out to the very
limits of the screen and of our peripheral vision, enveloping us so
completely in the action that we actively ‘feel’ along with the
characters in front of us.This cannot be achieved on a conventional
16:9 widescreen TV at home without moving to a ‘letterbox’ view or
losing the full scope of the original shot.

Until now. With an aspect ratio of 21:9, the Cinema 21:9 is the
world’s first cinema-proportioned LCD TV. In combination with Philips’
Ambilight technology – accurately matching on-screen content to extend
the picture beyond the confines of the screen – Cinema 21:9 delivers
the most completely immersive home viewing experience possible.

Cinema 21:9. The first TV to deliver a genuine Cinematic Viewing Experience to movie lovers in their own home.

Samsung Launches New Touchscreen LCDs

In Korea Samsung announced five New large LCD’s with touchscreen
technology for business usage. Or so Google and Microsoft would have you believe.

Last week, Google announced plans to launch a computer operating system in mid-2010 based on its Chrome web browser, directly challenging Microsoft's hold on the market. Google Chrome OS is intended for people "who live on the web" and who are happy to run remote software located on servers in Google's internet data centres - or "in the cloud" as it is known - rather than have all the software downloaded onto their computer. It will be based on a version of the free, open-source Linux operating system.

While further details on the Chrome OS are scant, Linus Upson, Google's engineering director, made one major promise: "We are completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."

The idea chimes with Microsoft's plans for the latest version of its own operating system, which launches in October. Windows 7 will run software like Word and Excel, stored on the user's computer in the traditional way, but for the first time will include free regularly updated antivirus software.

Which is likely to be the more secure approach? At this stage it is not clear. "Downloading updates is always going to be a step or two behind the cloud approach because it takes a while to get a fix out to a PC to install it," says Paul Jackson of Forrester Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. "The cloud approach allows patches to be applied much faster." However, he doubts Chrome OS will be able to do all its virus fighting remotely, since a web-based operating system will still be vulnerable to viruses that target the web browser and Linux itself.

Robert Caunt, an analyst with CCS Insight in London, points out that Google has a relatively good record on security. "Its gmail spam filter and search engine's phishing-detection is good. This disturbing, Orwellian move underscores how, in spite of comments otherwise, a purchase in the digital realm can't be compared to physical ownership of content.
I've long considered digital more ephemeral than the physical. It is why I still, for artists I enjoy, purchase the physical CD of an album. It is why I prefer to purchase DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, as opposed to relying on the possibly here-today, gone-tomorrow offerings of electronic distribution. Why my advocacy of the physical? It certainly isn't because I enjoy storing it, that much I can tell you. It's because I have access to it when I want it, where I want it. I don't have to worry about content going out-of-print, nor do I need to keep track of where I have it backed up, in case my hard drive fails.

I've heard one set of theories that posit that the world of digital distribution could theoretically offer unlimited content, for unlimited periods, simply because of the lack of physical distribution costs (production, packaging, shipping, shelf-space, and so on). The other theory, however, is the one that's omnipresent, but more sharply in focus in a tough economy such as the one we're in now. That theory is governed by the basic tenets of business, which look at profit and bottom line. If content isn't generating revenue, then why should a digital distributor maintain the server space to keep up the data, even if all it takes up are more bits and bytes?

Back to the Amazon example. What Amazon did with the Orwell books is different from the above concerns, but it dovetails into the same question of the permanence of digital ownership. Yes, Amazon refunded the money for the books -- but that's not the point. When one purchases something, one acquires the item, and assumes ownership of that item. That item is there.

This unusual maneuver, which Amazon says occurred because Orwell's publisher changed its mind about offering the electronic version of these titles, is all the more unsettling simply because readers already purchased the books and had their ownership of the item revoked. In the Orwell book case, the item was simply no longer there -- it was as if those Kindle users never owned it.

The implications of the Orwell case are highly unsettling -- for any type of copy-protected content, but especially for printed content. What happens if a controversial book comes out, and a publisher decides to remove it from distribution? Or, a book is banned for whatever reason -- as happened in parts of the world with The Satanic Verses? Neither is a common scenario, but both are examples of the control we, as owners, can potentially lose over the content we've purchased in the digital realm. With physical content, no one, even a disgruntled copyright owner, can take away what you've paid for.

A final thought: If, in this digital realm, we're not truly purchasing content, but rather "borrowing" it at a set price, and according to someone else's changing rulebook, we as consumers we deserve to know this up front, in clear and obvious language (unlike Amazon's clear references to "buying" books, and all the assumptions of ownership that go with buying books). If the rules have changed on us, we deserve to know.

Writer: Melissa J.
